Counselling at The Space

Struggling with something? We’re here to listen. If you’re aged 9–17 and live or go to school in the Cheddar Valley, you can access low-cost counselling through your school or at our welcoming Cheddar hub. Counselling gives you a safe, private space to talk about anything that’s on your mind — whether it’s stress, friendships, anxiety, family problems, or just feeling overwhelmed. You’ll be listened to without judgment, supported by someone trained to help you make sense of your feelings.

What to Expect from Counselling

Supporting young people’s mental health in the Cheddar Valley (ages 4–17)

WHAT IS COUNSELLING?

Counselling gives you a private space to talk about whatever’s on your mind-stress, anxiety, friendships, family problems, or loss. A trained counsellor helps you feel heard and find ways to move forward.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

You’ll meet with a friendly counsellor who listens without judgment. They won’t tell you what to do, but they’ll help you understand your feelings and build skills to cope and feel more confident.

IS IT CONFIDENTIAL?

Yes – what you say stays private unless there’s a serious risk of harm. In that case, we’ll talk to you and share the concern with someone who can help, like school or The Space’s safeguarding lead.

Ready to Get Started?

If you think counselling might help, the first step is to fill out our Request for Support form. If you’re under 16, a parent or carer will need to submit it with your permission. Once we receive it, we’ll be in touch to arrange an initial assessment and see if counselling is the right fit for you.
Sessions last 45 minutes, once a week, and we offer up to eight sessions. To get the most out of counselling, it’s important to commit to attending regularly—so if you’re not quite ready yet, that’s okay. Reach out when you feel the time is right. We ask for a £15 contribution per session, but if that’s difficult for you or your family, just let us know. We’ll do our best to help.

FAQs

Answers to the questions you might be asking

Will anyone else know what I talk about?

Counselling is confidential, which means what you share stays private. The only time we’d need to tell someone else is if we’re worried about your safety or someone else’s. If that happens, we’ll talk to you first and make sure you get the right help.

What if I don’t know what to say?

That’s totally okay. Your counsellor is there to help you feel comfortable. You can talk about whatever’s on your mind - big stuff or small stuff - and there’s no pressure to say anything until you’re ready.

What happens if I miss a session?

We understand things come up. Just let us know as soon as you can if you can’t make it. We’ll do our best to rearrange or catch up next time - but try to come regularly so you get the most out of it.
